What is Rolfing®?

Rolfing® Structural Integration is a holistic, whole-body approach that focuses on reorganizing and gently sculpting connective tissue called fascia to release deeply ingrained patterns of tension and strain. By addressing the body's soft tissue and myofascial release, it helps improve posture, movement, and overall well-being.

Developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf, Rolfing® Structural Integration is a unique system of deep tissue bodywork and movement education that goes beyond traditional massage therapy. While deep tissue massage and other manual therapy modalities target surface-level discomfort, Rolfing® looks at the entire body, realigning it to relieve chronic pain, enhance range of motion, and support lasting physical changes.

Rolfing® Structural Integration founder Dr. Ida P. Rolf

“This is the goal of Rolfing: when the body of working properly, the force of gravity can flow through it. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself.”

The Rolfing® Ten-Series

Sessions 1-3

  • These are called the “sleeve” sessions and focus on loosening and balancing the surface layers of connective tissue and fascia.

    • Session One: The focus is on enhancing breath quality through work on the arms, ribcage, and diaphragm, along with opening the upper legs, hamstrings, neck, and spine.

    • Session Two: Aims to balance the foundation of the body, focusing on the foot and lower leg muscles, which support posture.

    • Session Three: Looks at the relationship between the head, shoulder girdle, and hips when standing under the influence of gravity, setting the stage for realignment.

Sessions 4-7

  • Sessions 4-7 are the “core” sessions, addressing the deep tissue from the pelvis to the top of the head, where the body’s stability is supported.

    • Session Four: Begins work from the inside arch of the foot up the leg to the bottom of the pelvis, addressing myofascial tension.

    • Session Five: Works to balance abdominal muscles, influencing the curve of the back for better posture.

    • Session Six: Focuses on supporting the legs, pelvis, and lower back for improved posture and movement.

    • Session Seven: Zeroes in on the neck and head to improve alignment and ease tension.

Sessions 8-10

  • The final three sessions emphasize integration, ensuring that the changes made in previous sessions are incorporated into the whole body, resulting in fluid movement and coordination.

    • Sessions Eight and Nine: Focus on integrating previously established changes with the fascia, encouraging a balanced, smooth movement throughout the body.

    • Session Ten: The final session emphasizes balance and order in the body, ensuring the benefits of the Rolfing® Ten-Series last for years to come.

The proof is in the permanence

For over 40 years, Rolfing® has provided lasting relief for chronic pain, misalignments, and repetitive motion injuries. Its approach not only addresses immediate discomfort but also promotes long-term well-being by realigning the body and improving its overall structure in gravity. This goes beyond conventional massage therapy, physical therapy, or even chiropractic treatments.

Rolfing aids the body in areas of:

  • Fascia plays a crucial role in range of motion and the body’s ability to move freely. Tight fascia caused by overuse or injury can restrict blood flow and limit movement. Rolfing helps release these restrictions, improving mobility and strength.

  • A significant benefit of Rolfing® is improved posture, which helps reduce slouching and gives a slimmer appearance by aligning the body.

  • The malleable nature of fascia allows the body to be reshaped through a combination of bodywork and movement training. Rolfing helps realign the body’s structure and tone muscles, offering natural body contouring.

  • Fascia holds fat that creates cellulite. Rolfing® can release the tension in the fascia, allowing the fat to burn away and the skin to smooth out.

  • Back pain is one of the most common reasons people seek Rolfing®. Rolfing® Structural Integration can help realign the spine and release tension in the soft tissue, offering relief from long-term pain when other therapies have failed.
